Siri isn’t too objective

Recently, Apple fans were a little confused by the news that their beloved Siri had gone over to the dark side by promoting a rival smartphone. Nokia and Microsoft fans were even more surprised by the unexpected support.

When asked what the best smartphone in the world was, Siri responded with: Nokia Lumia 900. As it is a “gal’s” prerogative to change her mind, Siri has revised her attitude and has come up with a different answer.

However, Siri is now back to its loyal self – telling iPhone 4S users that the best smartphone in the world is the one they already own. This was the default answer the digital assistant was shipped with after the smartphone was released, last October.

Yet the question remains if Apple has figured out a way to prevent Siri from promoting a rival product. When the iPhone 4S was released, Apple explained that the company had no power over Siri’s answers.

Now it appears that the company can censor the information provided by Siri. The matter is still in a grey area, as the digital assistant is supposed to provide information from Wolfram Alpha, based on online reviews.

Siri is a driving force behind Apple’s record-breaking iPhone 4S sales, but not everyone is impressed with the Cupertino, Calif.-based company’s virtual assistant. Apple’s TV ads depict Siri as an impressive, fast-acting feature that intelligently offers help or information in responds to a wide range of and commands.

A number of users have found that Siri is not as helpful as Apple leads consumers to believe, however, and the company has been hit with a number of lawsuits as a result.

- Apple attorneys

Apple was sued in March by a New York man, Frank Fazio, who alleges that Apple’s Siri commercials are misleading and deceptive. “On many of Apple’s television advertisements, individuals are shown using Siri to make appointments, find restaurants, and even learn the guitar chords to classic rock songs or how to tie a tie,” Fazio’s complaint reads. “In the commercials, all of these tasks are done with ease with the assistance of the iPhone 4S’s Siri feature, a represented functionality contrary to the actual operating results and performance of Siri.”

Apple’s recommendation to Fazio: buy a different phone.

While Fazio and the rest of the plaintiffs named in the suit were quick to complain, Apple points out that none of them bothered to make use of Apple’s 30-day return policy and purchase a different phone. Apple also makes sure to point out that the iPhone 4S launch was its most successful iPhone launch ever.

“[The plaintiffs] offer only general descriptions of Apple’s advertisements, incomplete summaries of Apple’s website materials, and vague descriptions of their alleged—and highly individualized—disappointment with Siri,” Apple attorneys stated on Wednesday, The
Article source: Iphone4s News

I was an Android user for years and still have several Android devices. But last October I bought an iPhone 4S and I’m glad I did. I remember the exact date I bought it, because it was the last time Apple (AAPL) updated the iPhone. Unlike Android devices, there is only one new iPhone and one new iPad a year. That doesn’t offer a lot of choice but it does make things simpler.

There are things I really like about Android, including how easy it is to configure a new phone. Type in your Google (GOOG) credentials and, within minutes, the phone downloads all your email, contact information and even some personalization features via the cloud. Some models I’ve tested even automatically imported the “wall paper” photo that I had on my previous phone.

Google offers Android to multiple vendors, so there are plenty of phone choices that all — in theory — can run the same operating system and the same apps. Partly because of the competition, there are plenty of Android phones that are less expensive than iPhones, not only for end-users but also for the carriers that typically subsidize the end-user price in exchange for signing a two-year

contract. Android is doing quite well; the latest figures from ComScore give it 51 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, while Apple has 31 percent and Blackberry 12 percent.

Like Apple, Google has amassed an enormous developer base, and there are now more than 443,000 Android apps, according to AppBrain.

There are also a lot of different devices. OpenSignalMaps, a service that helps users find the best cell phone signals in their area, has been logging devices that download its app and has found “599 distinct brands” of Android devices and nearly 4,000
Article source: Kindle News

For those who have $600,000 lying around, there’s reportedly a new way to spend it. Amazon is said to be courting advertising agencies to buy ad placements on the
Kindle Fire‘s welcome screen, according to Ad Age.

The $600,000 would reportedly get advertisers a two-month run-time and cover both the front-page ad and inventory from Amazon’s “Special Offers,” according to Ad Age. If agencies were willing to spend $1 million, they could get even more ad inventory and be part of “Amazon’s public-relations push.” Currently, the device costs $199.

A new version of the Kindle Fire with a larger screen is said to be in the works. However, Ad Age reports that it’s unclear whether the welcome screen ads are to appear on a new Kindle Fire or the existing version.

A November 2011 Mobile Mix report by Millennial Media found that the number of ad impressions on the current Fire grew at an average daily rate of 19 percent, slightly outshining the growth of the first iPad in early 2010.

“We’re not just seeing millions of impressions, we’re seeing a monthly run rate of hundreds of millions of impressions,” said the report on the Fire.

This could one of the reasons why Amazon is confident of its high asking price for the welcome screen ads. However, Ad Age reports that the advertising agency executives it has spoken with have been reluctant to buy in.

“It’s kind of an expensive buy to not get a guaranteed audience and measurement,” one executive told Ad Age. “It doesn’t comply with a lot of our necessary planning rigor.”

CNET contacted Amazon for comment. We’ll update the story when we get more information.

The world’s biggest mobile phone network, China Mobile, could soon offer its customers Apple’s iPhone.

The Chinese carrier’s chairman has confirmed the two firms are in talks.

Compatibility issues between the iPhone and China Mobile’s 3G network mean that currently Apple’s handsets only work on the much slower 2G service.

The problem could be resolved with the launch of the next iPhone, rumoured to happen this summer, and when China adopts the 4G standard, analysts say.

China Mobile is the country’s biggest mobile phone network, and in terms of users the world’s largest, with more than 660 million customers.

Even though the iPhone is not yet in China Mobile’s official product line-up, about 15 million of the company’s customers are thought to be iPhone users already, having bought the phone through different channels.

China Mobile’s market share is about 67% – a lot more than its two rivals China Unicom and China Telecom – but it has been slipping steadily in the past few years.

Officially offering the iPhone to its subscribers could help China Mobile to get back the consumers it has lost to other carriers.

China Mobile chairman Xi Guohua mentioned the ongoing discussions between the two firms at a shareholders meeting in Beijing.

“We’ve been actively talking to Apple on how we can cooperate,” he said.

“I can’t give you too many details, but I’d like to repeat that both sides do hope to boost our cooperation.”

Last October when Apple launched the latest version of the iPhone the company revealed the new Siri voice assistant feature, which made its debut on the iPhone 4S and is currently the only iOS device it officially works on. Trouble is if you have the iPhone 4S and live outside of the US the service is not much use to you, and in the UK its pathetic you cannot search any businesses or addresses at the moment, Siri in the UK is just a waste of time and unless Apple turns on the switch to make it work to its full advantage. Well now there is a new Jailbreak tweak called International Locations for Siri.

iPhone 4S users in the US can use a number of location based Siri functions, but if you live in the UK and ask it where the nearest McDonalds is you have no chance of getting an answer, but the hard working jailbreaking community has found a way to make up for Apple’s shortcomings. An article on iDownloadBlog is reporting about a new Assistant Extensions plugin titled International Locations for Siri, which basically allows users to perform location based searches outside of the US.

As long as you own a jailbroken Siri running device you will be able to use International Locations to discover business local to you. You will be able to ask Siri about restaurants, and other points of interest and Siri will give you an answer. If you don’t already have AssistantExtensions downloaded to your device Cydia will get it for you along with the International Locations package.

Once both of these have finished the plugin needs to be activated from the settings menu and you’re good to go. According to the developer, Zaid Elkurdi, the tweak works in over 100 countries that include
Article source: Iphone4s News
